Day 59 - Crossing the Line

Day 59 – Monday 10th March 2014 – At Sea, Crossing the Line

It is a hot calm day with the sea like glass and it is not always like this, so you have to enjoy.
The ship crossed over the equator heading north at 11.25.

The choir practice at 12.15 is proving difficult, as we do not have as many people, as previous, so cannot carry along the quiet ones.

The crossing line ceremony took part at 14.00 with King Neptune and his Queen along with the judge holding court.

King Neptune

Joining in the ceremony were the Captain, Hotel Manager and Chief Engineer.

Pollywogs
The pollywogs all had to kiss the fish and be abused while laid out on the table being covered in all sorts of gunge, before being thrown into the pool, and they officially became shellbacks.

It was the Chief Engineer’s turn to be given the same treatment before being hurled into the pool. Everyone joined in the fun, and well done to the crew for putting on the show.

At 16.00, I took advantage to lay out in the sun when most of the heat had gone out of it, on Deck 9 near to the aft swimming pool.

                                                         Sunset in the Doldrums

Today’s cocktail, Ship Wrecked, a combination of vodka, fresh mint leaves, shaken with pineapple juice and lemon mix.  We asked the bar tender to throw out the mint and replace it with cucumber, and it tasted a lot better, new name for it, Ship Rescued.

Theatre show is Jessica Wilson, a British singer with an amazing voice who captured the audience with her variety of songs, a great show.

After the theatre, went on deck at midnight for stargazing, and there they were visible in the sky, the constellations of the Southern Cross and The Plough, though still not far enough north to see the Pole Star.

The aft swimming pool had a canvas cover over it, which we could not understand why?, until while looking at the sky, the rubbish out of the funnel came onto the deck, as the Engineers’ started soot blowing the economiser tubes, time for bed.
