Day 57 – Saturday 8th
March 2014 – At Sea
Between 09.00 and 10.00, we still have the Australian pilot
on board, as we went through the China Straits at the bottom end of the main
island of Papua New Guinea. It is so
called because this is the passage used when going to and from Australia to
China.
Samaria Island
Paradise
It was a beautiful morning as we entered the Straits and on
the sea could be seen the local fishermen out in their single handed canoes, as
we passed by they were waving their paddles in the air, to be responded by the
guests waving back from the ship.
Samaria Highway
This for me was absolutely amazing, as we passed by the small
island of Samaria, as I had been here forty years ago.
This tropical paradise with its lush vegetation, you may be able to see
a road way at the bottom of the island.
The highlight was to be able to drive along this road, right round the
island and it would take 10 minutes. It
was here I also had my first taste of bananas which had been cooked in the
ground.
It was wonderful to see again and
to know, paradise does not change.
Leaving China Strait
At 13.00 we had first new choir practice, with a new male
choir master Tommi, a new pianist and a new choir name, Sound Waves Choir. It is looks more technical and challenging; I
just hope he does not take the fun out of it.
With so many Japanese on board who do not seem to want to
join in most activities, they have been asking for volunteers; I have been
persuaded to be take part and become a male model in a fashion show. Do not worry, I am not on the turn, but I
have until the 14th to practice the funny walk.
The late afternoon we have our usual down pour which puts
the dampers on the bronzy.
Today’s cocktail is Citrus Sunset, vodka, limoncello shaken
with orange and cranberry juices, an acquired taste.
The show was Jon Udry, a juggler, who compared with the
others we had seen, did not drop anything. Glen MacNamara, a swing singer, which is not
my type of music but I managed to stay and sit through it all.
Another, different day with the passing through the China
Straits being the highlight, and looking forward to tomorrow’s arrival in port.
